FSPCA Preventive Controls Qualified Individual Training

The Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Food Safety is announcing an upcoming Preventive Controls Training to be held at the Ohio Department of Agriculture from October 19-21, 2021.

This PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) training is designed to help you understand the requirements under the Preventive Controls for Human Foods rule (21 CFR 117). Preventive controls are steps that you, a domestic or foreign food facility, must take to reduce or eliminate food safety hazards. The rule on Preventive Controls for Human Food is mandated by the 2011 FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The rule also incorporates the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) requirements, which have been updated. If you determine you are required to develop and implement a food safety plan, this training is one way of becoming a PCQI.

In general, the requirements apply to you if you manufacture, process, pack, or hold human food for consumption in the United States, whether your facility is domestic or foreign. The requirements apply to you if you are required to register with FDA under section 415 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act. Entities defined as “farms,” retail food establishments, non-profit organizations and restaurants are some (not all) of the entities that are not subject to the preventive control requirements because they are not required to register with FDA. Other exemptions include certain business sizes and food products. Keep in mind, even if you make the determination that you are exempt from the parts of the rule that deal with the development and implementation of a food safety plan, there are still parts of the rule that will apply to you (ie GMPs, training, recordkeeping) so I strongly urge you to review the rule in its entirety.

Registrations for this training have begun.  Please fill out the Registration form and follow the instructions.  The training is 2 ½ days and follows the FSPCA curriculum. The fee for the class is $50.00 and includes registration fee, training materials, certificate, and course attendance. Lunch is not provided.
