 Changes to the Ohio Pesticide Rules


  1. Restricted Use Label — These products are now “restricted use” which means only licensed applicators will be able to purchase them. These labels supersede all prior labels for these products and expire in December 2018.

  2. Dicamba-Specific Training — Prior to applying these products in the 2018 growing season, all applicators, including applicators acting under direct supervision, must complete dicamba or auxin-specific training. This training must be provided by either a registrant of one of the three products or an ODA-approved training program. For an updated list of approved trainings, please visit our website at www.agri.ohio.gov.
    *Note: Indiana and Kentucky are not accepting Ohio’s approved training.

  3. Increased Recordkeeping Requirements — Private and commercial applicators are required to maintain application records as outlined in OAC 901:5-11-10. This information must be generated on the day of application and retained for 3 years. In addition to Ohio’s recordkeeping requirements, the dicamba labels also require applicators to record and maintain additional information for two years and have 14 days to complete the following information:

    Proof of Training   Spray System Cleanout   Start and Finish Times
    Application Timing    Air Temperature   Nozzle Selection
    Receipts of Purchase   Wind Speed and Direction   Buffers
    Sensitive Crop Awareness   Tank Mix Partners   Product Labels

  4. Wind Speed — Applications may only occur when wind speeds are between 3-10 miles per hour at boom height.

  5. Temperature Inversions — Applications may only be made between predetermined sunrise and sunset times.

  6. Sensitive/Susceptible Crops — Applications can only be made when the wind is blowing away from non-tolerant susceptible crops, which now includes non-dicamba tolerant soybeans. Applicators are also required to survey the application site for neighboring sensitive areas. The applicator must also consult sensitive crop registries to locate nearby sensitive areas where available.

  7. Spray System Equipment Clean-out — Spray equipment must be thoroughly cleaned before and after applications. The triple rinse procedure includes cleaning tanks, pumps, lines, filters, screens and nozzles with a strong detergent-based sprayer cleaner.
